Yes, it misses a few beats, but despite its flaws the season-three opener is breezy, kinetic, and every bit as intelligent as its forebears. It's a slow start, but now that Sherlock has found its scent, the game is most definitely afoot.

This was the triumphant return of the most charismatic, most fun character on British television, played by Cumberbatch with insouciant verve. Sherlock wasn't flawless but it was brilliant.

It was all good stuff - the performances and production are among the BBC's very best, though some of the techniques used to visualise Sherlock's impressive mental faculties did feel more garish, more intrusive and dated than they have in the past.

Some clever edits tipping into overdone while burying character beats, Watson's internal conflict dismissed, another woman who just can't help but enjoy the sociopathic little scamp, and a healthy spoonful of fan service to make the medicine go down.

For me, the relationship that blossomed the most in this episode was between Mycroft and Sherlock. Their sibling rivalry is compelling.
